I’m about to tell you something that, at first glance, sounds heretical: not every promise given in the Bible applies to our lives today.
As example, Abraham was promised as an old man that he would father a child. I hope that doesn’t apply to me. I think my wife would agree.
The same can be said about the promises to Joshua when he began leading the children of Israel into the Promised Land after the death of Moses.
I believe, though, that the spirit of the promises may be applied to the lives of those who diligently seek to live like Jesus.
As the older Joshua stood looking into The Promised Land, he had no idea what lie ahead. Even for a seasoned warrior and a mature leader like him, the challenge that he faced must have been daunting.
Similarly, we stand at the beginning of a new year not knowing what lies ahead. Will we prosper, or will we face crises? Will we find health or shall our health fail? Will we look back a year from now with tears for lost loved ones? The challenge of a new year can seem daunting.
Find the Words of the Lord to Joshua, and take them to heart. Be strong. Be courageous. Do not be discouraged. “The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” DO NOT BE AFRAID.
