Fear Not 365 – Though He Slay Me…

April 21, 2017 by ChristianHolinessDaily Leave a Comment

I met a businessman today who burned for Christ.  I live in Branson, Missouri, so finding a businessman who claims to be Christian is as easy as finding dirt. Finding one with a passion for Christ is not so common.

His story is worth retelling. A few years ago he suffered a heart attack, a severe one. It was the kind that ultimately kills 95 percent  of its victims. He went by helicopter to the hospital while technicians repeatedly shocked him with a defibrillator. He remembered much of it.

He said he was in and out of consciousnes. They zapped him. He prayed. He slipped away. They zapped him again. He prayed again. Again, he slipped away. They shocked him repeatedly for the duration of the flight.

What did he pray?

Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.

Job 13:15 was his prayer as death knocked on his door.

This man no longer fears death. He no longer fears suffering. He has a peace that  surpasses all understanding.

Fear Not for though He slay us, we can trust Him.

Fear Not 365 – For He is Mighty

April 20, 2017 by ChristianHolinessDaily Leave a Comment

These are scary times. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you. I suppose, though, that every generation feels that there’s is just a little closer to doom than the last.

To King David, the scariest scene that he could imagine was likely an invading army led by chariots. Then as now, a nation must have adequate defenses to survive. King David’s united Israel was no different. The Bible doesn’t tell us how many chariots were counted in his army, but the Bible tells us in one spot that King Solomon possessed 1400 (1 Kings 10:26).

David knew that his strength was not in his armies. He knew the size of his enemies’ armies was of no matter. His strength lied in the Lord.

Fear not. Our God is mightier than any army.

Fear Not 365 – For In Our God Is HopeĀ

April 19, 2017 by ChristianHolinessDaily Leave a Comment

Nearly twenty years ago, I stood on a table in the back of the prison chapel, next to a tripod with a VHS camera mounted on top. From there I could see everything in the room. What I recorded would be broadcast throughout the entire institution, into the hospital, into the psych ward, into the units.

On Sunday mornings, I watched Italian mobsters bow before the image of Mother Mary and beg forgiveness while Father David delivered mass. Later, Lloyd and Nita, volunteers for over thirty years, would lead singing in the Protestant service, led by either a Baptist or Pentecostal chaplain.

On Wednesday evenings, a simple Bible study was led by sincere and loving volunteers. On Thursdays nights, Lloyd and Nita were back, with half a dozen other volunteers, in a simple testimony and prayer service. The volunteers gave the inmates a sense of love and normalcy. Those folks cared. They prayed. They loved.

On Tuesday nights, though, that’s when the Spirit moved. Volunteers from a small holiness church came on Tuesday nights and delivered fire. They never failed to preach a sermon about repentance and forgiveness. They minced no words. Their message was, “You and your filthy sin put yourself into prison. You only have yourself to blame. And, only God can deliver your soul and give you freedom.”

Of course, the freedom of which they spoke was freedom from sin, not physical release from prison. Every week, the altars would fill up with gang members and drug dealers, angry young men and watery-eyed old men, who would fall to their knees and cry out to their Father for love, understanding, and forgiveness.

And they would find it.

God is the God of Hope. He has a soft spot in His heart for sinners. He reaches out to those in prison.  He loves them and forgives them when they repent.

Oh. By the way… Most of us are in prison. A prison of sin.

God will free us from sin if we cry out to Him.

Fear not, for in our God is Hope.
